Smith Places Fourth at University of Southern Maine Invitational

Smith placed fourth out of ten teams at the USM Invitational this past weekend, with stellar performances all around. The team had 19 PRs, several qualifiers for Division III New England Championships, and two ECAC qualifying performances! Senior Sarah Romano (left) not only qualified for ECACs in the weight throw with her toss of 14.41m, but she also broke a six-year-old school record. The 4x800 team of Kayla Clark, Kirsten Silfvenius, Maya Rittmanic, and Caroline Kimball-Katz also qualified for ECACs with their time of 10:06.32. Sophomore Maya Ritmmanic also placed first in the high jump with her 1.57m leap.

Smith's Newly Resurfaced Indoor Track Makes Its Debut!

After a week of creative practices in all kinds of locations (Mount Holyoke, reservoirs, outdoor track, Scott gym...), we can finally return to our own indoor track, which was spiffed up considerably over January break. The track was both resurfaced and repainted. Although a trace of new paint smell remains, the facility looks and feels fantastic.

Track Girls clean up well

Here are a few snap shots from the Student Athlete Banquet. Etta Grover-Silva was named Junior of the Year and Nora Youngs was named Senior of the Year. This is the 4th of 4 years that Nora has been named athlete of the year for her respective class. Also, big ups to the graduating Seniors: Claire Edwards (captain), Alina Ainyette, Nora Youngs, Genya Pepper, Jessie Katz, and Caitlin Ritchie.

4th in NEWMAC championship

Smith women have moved back into the top half of the conference championship. The team finished 4th with 81 points. We competed well despite the sudden extreme heat that hit the New England Area. Big Ups to all that have put in so much work in this season.

Aloha Aloha...

Saturday we traveled to Brunswick, Maine to compete at Bowdoin College in the 2009 Aloha Relays. We had an overall GREAT showing from the Smith women, adding more division III New England Qualifiers (Claire Edwards - 100m/LJ, Mary Cote - 100m, Uzuri Sims - 100m/200m, and Anna Cressotti - 800m), a host of personal records (way too many to list), and a new school record in the Discus by Ruby Western. The Aloha relays features an annual throwers relay (which our throwers competed their hearts out) and a hula hoop contest. Claire made it to the final three in the competition and represented Smith well. The top 6 competitors received leis for their performances and that was most definitely the joke of the day...that everyone got "laid." Here are some photos:
